Apple iPod Nano accessories

Jasmine France Jasmine France, Senior Associate Editor April 6, 2009

So you've managed to get your hands on one of the world's most popular MP3 players, the Apple iPod Nano. This sleek and stylish device will keep you plenty entertained for sure, but you'll soon realize there's a lot more fun to be had if you move beyond the confines of what comes in the box. For one thing, those stock Apple earbuds aren't the best-sounding--or most comfortable--headphones to be had. The first step is to upgrade, and our top headphones list is an excellent place to start.

Next, consider protecting your investment or even dressing it up a bit. Belkin's Remix Metal hard case can shield the iPod from damage while not detracting from the stylishness of the player. It comes in several color options, so you can add a little variety to your iPod's repertoire. Also, the Nano in particular is a perfect workout companion, thanks to its solid-state flash memory and compact design. Keep it out of the way and clean of sweat with the Griffin Aerosport Armband, or consider tracking your fitness with the excellent Nike + iPod Sport Kit. And if you're really missing good, old terrestrial radio and want to share your tunes to boot, check out the Altec Lansing im600, a compact portable speaker system with integrated radio and an alarm clock. Finally, take advantage of the fourth-generation Nano's onboard voice recording abilities and upgrade your listening experience with the Etymotic hf2 earphones.

The Bottom Line Maybe it's not the reason to buy a Nano, but the useful Nike + iPod Sport Kit and the data-centered Nike+ Web site will appeal to runners who already own a Nano. Altec Lansing has been in the iPod speaker market longer than anyone, and it shows. The inclusion of a rechargeable battery and an FM radio makes the iM600 incredibly versatile. For iPhone users with a penchant for improved sound quality and a willingness to stick things in their ears, the Etymotic hf2 earphones are a reasonable option.
