An MP3 player for mom
October 8, 2007
Q
I am looking for an MP3 player for my mom. She plans to use it at the gym, so it should be fairly compact, and she will be listening mostly to podcasts and audio books, so it should have a bookmarking feature. She's willing to spend up to $150, but I'm sure she would like it if it cost less. It should also be easy to use because, while I will be around to help her start out, I'd rather not be required every time she wants to add or remove something from her player. I own a Nano, so I find myself pushing her in the Apple direction. Do you have any suggestions?

Straight up: the iPod handles podcasts better than any other players, so the Nano might be the best choice in this case. Another suitable option is the Zen V Plus, which has the added benefit of an FM tuner--which I always recommend for gym users. That player is also one of the best values around, and it offers active bookmarking and comes with ZenCast software for organizing podcasts. Both the Nano and the Zen V Plus have armbands available for separate purchase.

There's also the Sansa Clip, which comes with a removable belt-clip and is very inexpensive (1GB for $40), but we haven't reviewed that player quite yet, so I'm not sure how well it will handle podcasts.

Jasmine France's two favorite pastimes are rocking out to great music and chatting up whoever's willing to listen. Appropriately, her coverage areas include digital audio and cordless phones.
