"Used for years, satisfied never"
Pros: It's a Wireless Carrier.
Cons: Abysmal service, deceptive terms, horrible reception, calls down go through, bad signals, dropped calls, arrogant customer service
Summary: Oh my goodness how can I even describe how bad my experience with this carrier has been? Let's see...my father had mutiple cell phones and a family plan, and not only did it never get service in most areas (the woods, mountains, on the road, past military base, remote locations), but when he tried to terminate the contract he was informed that he would be penalized for early termination DESPITE having been told by a customer service represenative that he could cancel at any time!
When I was in college I had one of the cell phones, and got NO signal at college, and NO signal at home. I had to go outside, and climb onto a mound 50 feet away from the house to get three bars.
The customer service is the worst I have ever encountered.
I switched to Verizon and got CRYSTAL CLEAR reception at home, three bars at college, and could hear people on the phone like they were standing next to me (Cingular had HORRIBLE echoing effect more than half the time between other Cingular customers).
Once I went over my minutes and called Verizon, they reduced my bill no questions asked. I'm never going back to Cingular no matter what.

I absolutely agree with you. ATT has horrible Internet, Cellphone and especially Customer service. Customer service person never been helpful. One of the WORST CUSTOMER SERVICES ever experienced. I would NOT recommend this carrier.

Yep, ATT is terrible and a complete rip off.

I absolutely agree with you. Cingular is just trash. I live in a HIGH coverage area and still get very weak reception, if I get it at all.
(We've been stuck with Cingular for three years. When our contract is up, you can bet we'll be finding another carrier.) -
...if AT&T wouldn't be the sole carrier of the iPhone. Prepare yourself to be insulted because since the day Cingular/AT&T was known for going to be the only carrier for the iPhone they became the greatest carrier in the world.

Remind me why we care about the quality of
Cingular service from several years ago. AT&T service has absolutley no correlation to what ever your relatives experienced out in the middle of nowhere back when Cingular had very low capacity. Today, AT&T has the most customers and more than enough capacity to service them all. -
I had used Cingular until 2005 when I called to cancel service. I took a total of six telephone calls and over 2 hours on hold to straighten out my account. I did receive a check from them for the balance.
Fast forward to Jan, 2007. I obtained a Sony laptop packaged with Cingular wide area network data service. I called for the free trial activation. Cingular refused to activate the service claiming that I owed a balance. They could not tell me what the alleged balance was but referred me to yet another department who placed me on hold for a very long time -- I hung up and did not try again. -
I was a Cingular customer for about three years, having moved from Sprint. Both carriers had issues at my house and my office both of which were "covered" per their coverage maps (for Cingular, they are in areas marked "best"). I'm in the midst of Silicon Valley, totally flat area, but poor coverage - great.
I also had three bad phones with Cingular - they would reluctantly replace them with a refurb that just broke again. The first phone just died, the second had issues with the keypad, and the third had its normal speaker crap out so I had to exclusively use speaker phone to make calls. I use my phone maybe 200 minutes per month and in clean environments. No dropping the phone or dialing while digging ditches in the backyard.
When my son's phone had issues (from the day we bought it) with text spam that we couldn't turn off, Cingular was unwilling to help - they kept bouncing me around to different people who just seemed not to GAS.
Now I'm at Verizon - the signal is better and the phone works where they say (everywhere I have tried so far), though the call quality is actually a bit worse (a bit like the old analog days). Customer service is awesome - the activation process was incredibly easy (bought from Amazon) and the number port was similarly simple and painless.
Hopefully I remain happy.
In the end, however, none of the companies are perfect. Plus your location, terrain, and brand/model of phone matter immensely. For me, chatting with local friends about who they were having success with was my selection method of choice. -
They have service coverage maps for a reason. It isn't Cingular's fault that you don't have service in an area when it isn't listed on the map.
I have yet to have a hard time with any of the customer service representatives either.
And you can cancel your contract at any time, so the lady wasn't wrong when she told you that..you just have to pay the termination fee (which is clearly stated on every contract). They give you 30 days to try it out to avoid the termination fee; maybe you should have taken advantage of that. -
I agree with you on Cingular. When this contract is up, I will be switching to another provider. I like the rollover minutes, but I can manage without them for a phone that actually gets service.

Before signing up for any cell phone check with them to make sure they cover the areas you will most likely be at. For me Sprint offered no coverage around where I went to college, so there was no way I would sign with them. Verizon had horrible coverage along the lake, and I that turned me off signing with them. Just check the coverage.
