"excellent value...if you do it right..."
Pros: Quite a few upgrades from the Core system. If you plan it out right, you can end up spending way less than what they would have you believe. EVEN without having the hard drive.
Cons: the fact that it doesn't even come with the old 20GB HD is still a big detraction.
Summary: Bottom line, if you're smart, you can get this system and buy your upgrades on a website that rhymes with the word "Hay" and begins with an "E". You'll spend less than the upgraded versions and for most people this edition of the system will satisfy them completely.
Differences:
Arcade does NOT have: headset, network cable, HD, HDMI cord (only comes with standard)

Most of that can be bought online for pennies on the dollar.
Yes, the advantage of buying the mid-range 360 is that you don't have to go hunting for those accessories. And to be sure, looking at the specs, buying the Elite 360 just shows everyone how much of a sucker you are. For all of us penny-pinchers in these hard economic times, a little hunting may save you enough dough to buy some more 360 games... :-)

In the review it says that as the arcade version is minus a hard drive
that the arcade version "precludes" you from storage of online content...is this the case if you have already got a 20g Hard drive and have been using it for online play????
may sound like a silly question but i am a bit clueless at the best of times

i agree that getting the elite is really a overpriced non-necessity. I recently had to make the decision to get another xbox 360 due to mine malfunctioning. i am releived to find out that i can use my current hard drive to bring it up to speed. whew. good article. i think xbox should have at least put a 5-10 GB hd geez.

I discovered that Circuit City is selling a 20 gig hard drive bundled with an extra wireless controller for a mere $39 online with free shipping. Then, I went to Best Buy, where I purchased the Xbox 360 Arcade for $199. If you buy a game from a list of six family titles, you then get a Best Buy gift card for $50 at the register. I picked "Rattatoullie" for $19. So... an Xbox 360 console with a 20 gig hard drive, and an extra controller for $238, plus a free game and 30 dollars. Like you said, "Excellent value, if you do it right."
